Since its incorporation in 1908 and its founding long prior to that time, Canadian has always been a place of pride and purpose for its driven and determined citizens. In the 1985 Hemphill County History book, Tom Abraham noted, “…I know Canadian folks—they just don’t give up.” This speaks volumes about the people who have worked so hard over the past 130+ years to build this ever changing community that continues to thrive.
Canadian offers an award winning school system, professional healthcare, dedicated government officials, a strong economic climate, and a quality of life that far surpasses that found in most small rural communities. The Canadian Independent School District educates children from early childhood through high school. Canadian Elementary School houses Prekindergarten through Second Grade. Baker Elementary houses Third through Fifth grades, Canadian Middle School is home to Sixth through Eighth grades, and grades Nine through Twelve reside at Canadian High School. Year after year students thrive in the CISD with its low student to teacher ratio and its ‘Commitment to Excellence.’
Canadian offers a variety of healthcare providers from optometrists to dentists to general care practitioners, as well as a county hospital that provides cardiac rehabilitation, physical and respiratory therapy, and hospice care in addition the their lab and x-ray facilities.
Canadian is served by City Manager, Hoyt Manning under the leadership of Mayor Rob Talley and the elected City Council. The City of Canadian provides parks, water, sewer, recycling, and trash services, along with numerous infrastructure programs.
