The Citadelle Art Foundation


Built in 1910 as the First Baptist Church, this property was purchased in 1977 by Dr. Malouf and Therese Abraham and restored as a private residence. In May of 2009, the Abraham's donated their home and their extensive private art collection to the community as a public museum. Open Thurs-Sat 11am – 4pm and Sun 1pm – 4pm. Aud

A creation of Gene Cockrell, the 50 foot dinosaur sits atop a mesa south of Canadian on Highway 60/83. Aud is named after Gene’s wife Audrey. The one ton mass of steel, wire mesh and concrete is visible from the highway at distances up to three miles north and south. Aud made her first appearance in April of 1992 and has been an area attraction every since.


River Valley Pioneer Museum


The museum serves to preserve Canadian’s pioneer and turn-of-the century heritage. The museum contains Period Rooms as well as Photograph and Glass Negative collections from the late 19th/early 20th centuries. It also holds geological, archeological, and Native American Exhibits. Open Tues-Sat 9am – 12pm/1pm – 4 pm and Sat-Sun 2pm – 4pm. Located at 118 North 2nd Street. www.rivervalleymuseum.org



Canadian River Walking Bridge


Originally built in 1915, this bridge became a part of SH 33 (now US 60/83) in the early 1920s. Today, its total length is 3,255 feet and is part of a scenic hiking and biking trail over the Canadian River Valley and wetlands habitat. The bridge is a great area for walking, jogging, bird watching and wildlife viewing. Located North of Canadian city limits.

Texas Crown Performance Hall

The newly restored auditorium at Canadian Middle School hosts a variety of touring theatrical and musical performance. Located across from The Citadelle. Online at www.TexasCrownHall.org



Canadian River Art Western Gallery & Fine Art Academy

Canadian River Art is a combination western art gallery and fine art academy located at 314 Main Street in Canadian, Texas. We sell quality original fine art by some of the most talented artists of the American West and offer certified art instruction for youth and continuing art education for adults.


The gallery offers quality original works that capture the essence of the American West, both past and present. Central to our focus are works that depict the broad human experience, landscapes, and wildlife of the region geographically defined by the South Canadian River of New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. We offer paintings and sculpture by both established and emerging artists, as well as works produced by the native peoples of the southwestern United States.

Canadian City Swimming Pool

A new, two-level facility with diving board and lots of fun for the whole family. Open during the summer on Tue-Sat 1pm – 7pm and Sun 2pm – 6pm. Closed on Monday's. Located at 1005 Ash Street.


Canadian Skate Park

Tony Hawk was consulted on the design of this exciting skate park. Come and have a day of fun with your skateboard, skates, roller blades, scooter or bike. Located at the corner of Cheyenne & Willard Street.



Canadian City Parks

Centennial Park at Third Street and Houston Street. Jackson Park at Purcell Street and Ash Street. Sunset Park at the corner of Highway 60/83 and Cedar. And Second Street Park at Highway 60/83 and Elliot.



Palace Theatre

Restored and updated, this theatre boasts a digital projection system that is one of only 300 in the world. It is also the only THX approved theatre in the Texas Panhandle. New releases shown nightly with a matinee on Sundays. Located at 210 Main Street. www.palacetheatre.com



Hemphill County Recreation Complex

Outdoor fun for everyone! The Hemphill County Recreation Complex is home to the Rodeo Arena, city ponds, baseball complex, horseshoe pit, children’s playground, Jones pavilion and the driving range, plus the Hemphill County RV Park. Located on North Highway 60/83.


W.C.T.U. Hemphill County Library


The W.C.T.U. Building is the only building in the United States ever built, owned and maintained by a local Women’s Christian Temperance Union chapter. The chapter, formed in 1902, began holding bazaars in 1906 to pay for construction, and the two story brick structure with a basement was completed in 1911. The Christmas bazaar, now a century old tradition, is hosted by local volunteers and continues to provide for the Hemphill County Library housed in the building. Located at 500 Main Street.

Canadian Community Center


The Canadian Community Center offers a variety of programs for all members of the family including a weight/exercise room, gym and activity courts, 2 racquetball courts, and a whirlpool/sauna. Programs include aerobics, swimming lessons, basketball, soccer, and touch football leagues, gymnastics and more! Located at 915 Cheyenne Ave. Open Mon-Fri 5am – 9pm and Sat 9am – 1pm.


Lake Marvin and Black Kettle National Grasslands

Combining natural beauty, fascinating history, pristine native habitat and awesome wildlife and bird watching opportunities, with both driving and hiking trails, the 575 acres of grasslands and riparian areas capped by the 63-acre Lake Marvin qualifies the Black Kettle National Grasslands as the crown jewel of panhandle nature sites. The site includes a beautifully rustic Lodge as wells as primitive and RV full hook-up style camping, fishing and limited boating. Reservations for the Lodge are made through the Chamber of Commerce. Camping is first come, first serve, with an honor system on?site fee box. Located 12 miles northeast of Canadian on FM 2266. After crossing the Canadian River Bridge northbound, take FM 2266 to the right.


Gene Howe Wildlife Management Area

Whether you choose to enjoy the views and sounds of wetlands species on the area marshes, river bottom and creek areas, that have been restored in conservation partnership projects and now host studies on species from turtles to bats, Great Blue Herons to native Rio Grande Turkeys, or prefer to visit the prairie dog towns, wild plum thickets and antelope or Lesser Prairie Chicken habitat in the sandhills, adventure and education await on the Gene Howe. Adventurers are first asked to check in at the headquarters and are required to have a pass from Texas Parks and Wildlife or be part of a group program. The only exceptions are for those who take driving tours. Fishermen need a license too. Public hunting is available under specific, scheduled, permits only and the area is closed for other public access during these hunts. For information on the scheduled programs with TPWD personnel call Gene Howe WMA at 806-323-8642. Located on FM 2266, with entrances as little as 4 miles from downtown Canadian.
